Acute Dissecting Aneurysm of the Aorta

Abstract
DISSECTING aortic aneurysm is reported to result in death in more than 80 per cent of cases during the early or acute stage of the disease. The available literature has been reviewed by Shaw1 and by DeBakey, Cooley, and Creech.2 Because of the rapidly fatal course of the disease and the mechanical nature of the lesion, Johns3 has emphasized the fact that the problem should be considered a surgical emergency.Four previous reports of patients operated upon during the acute phase of the disease have recorded failures. Three of the patients died of renal failure,1 , 3 , 4 and 1 of external rupture . . .
