Amebic Cellulocutaneous Invasion byNaegleria aerobiawith Generalized Visceral Lesions after Subcutaneous Inoculation: An Experimental Study in Guinea Pigs

Abstract
Injection of bacteria-free Naegleria aerobia into subcutaneous and skeletal muscle tissue of guinea pigs was followed by a gradual loss of weight and a general loss of strength, and, in some cases, by death. Examination showed marked invasion from the local injection site into lymphoid tissue and viscera, but the nervous system was not invaded. Similar injections using Hartmannella culbertsoni produced only local abscess formation. The histologic appearance of the lesions is described, and the possible occurrence of such lesions in nature is discussed. The growth and invasion of the host are reminiscent of the invasion and destruction of a host by a malignant neoplasm.
