Abstract
This is a report on the thyroidal reponse to an injected dose of 131I in the garter snake. Specimens of both sexes measuring 1–2 ft were kept in wooden cages at 23–28 °C with 8 h lighting daily and were fed with goldfish. After the animals were injected with 131I they were maintained at 29 ± 1 °C and were not fed. Water was provided ad libitum. The pattern of thyroidal 131I accumulation at different times of the year was determined with various numbers of snakes (Fig. 1). Each snake was given an i.p. injection of 10–20 μCi 131I. At 24-h intervals for 10–14 days, the radioactivity over the thyroid and over a non-thyroidal region (half-way between the thyroid and the head) was measured according to Lynn, McCormick & Gregorek (1965). The effect of administration of drugs and hormone on this pattern was also examined. TreatmentKeywords
