Abstract
Soybean rust caused by Pbakopsora pacbyrbizi H. Syd. & P. Syd. is one of the major disease problems limiting soybean yield in the tropics and subtropics of Asia. The presence of P. pacbyrbizi has been reported in both the eastern and western hemispheres, including Africa (Figure 1). However, the disease has caused significant economic losses only in Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines and Vietnam, and in parts of China, Japan, Australia, Korea, and India (Bromfield and Yang, 1976; Sinclair, 1982). But, rust should be regarded as a threat to most soybean producing regions. A number of reviews discuss in detail its distribution, host range and occurrence (Bromfield, 1980; Kochman, 1977; Yang, 1977; Sinclair, 1982; Tschanz and Wang, 1980), Figure 1 Areas in which soybean rust has been reported (dark shaded areas represent countries where soybean rust causes considerable economic loss). https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9780429267932/f8ff6a6f-88de-4ac2-a751-d709d13f1b85/content/fig1_172.tif" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"/> 563as well as its epidemiology (Casey, 1979; Bromfield, 1980; Tschanz et al., 1984) and threat potential (Casey, 1979; Bromfield, 1980).Keywords
