Abstract
In order to evaluate the significance of the pathological changes observed in the human kidney after intravenous infusion of hypertonic mannitol, serial needle biopsies of canine kidney were compared before and periodically after injection into the renal artery of either 1) 35 cc of 20% mannitol or 2) 35 cc of 5% dextrose in water and 3) after manipulation of the renal artery without injection. Sections stained with hematoxylin and eosin were graded as to the severity of the tubular swelling and vacuolization observed. Significant tu bular swelling of approximately equal magnitude was observed in all groups 2 hours after injection or manipulation. Keywords
