Abstract
Experience indi-cates that a masking noise alters the auditory feedback of the stutterer''s voice and that under this condition stuttering is reduced. The results of the use of masking noise generated by small portable noise generators are reported subjectively by one stutterer. These noise generators (stutter-aids) resemble small hearing aids. The latest model, reported has a frequency range of 35 to 770 cycles and a sound output from 97 to 119 dB. Controls that vary both the frequency and loudness are provided. The experimenter switched on the aid when he felt he was going to stutter or when he found himself in a block. This procedure effected a reduction in stuttering in a variety of speaking situations. It is noted that "carryover" is not permanent. This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
