Abstract
To the Editor. —The applanation tonometer relieves many of the spurious recordings attributed to Schiøtz hand held tonometry. Interference with the tonometer arm on superiorly mounted models by hair, hats, and scarves has been noted frequently by our clinic staff. Two recent cases of patients with large physiologic cupping and high pressure recordings on their initial visit were subsequently seen to have high tonometry readings due to interference with the tonometer arm of the Zeiss slit lamp. These patients had been subjected to Goldmann perimetry and tonography during the interim between visits. The patient illustrated had an applanation tonometry reading of 30 (top) with her hair forward and 10 (bottom) when her hair was held back. The cases noted prompted this letter with the hope of preventing needless worry, expense, and time of patients whose hair style may interfere with the measurement of ocular pressure.
