Abstract
We discuss a simple molecular model of the smectic A phase for hard spherocylinders interacting with centre-to-centre 1/r 6 attractive potential. The theory predicts the smectic period of the smectic A phase. The influence of the additional attractive tail on the smectic A formation is studied. The detailed numerical results are given for hard spherocylinders with length to diameter ratio equal to 5 and 10.Keywords
