A Case of Cerebral Abscess withHaemophilus aphrophilusCultured from Spinal Fluid

Abstract
The report deals with the isolation of Haemophilus aphrophilus from the cerebrospinal fluid of a 20-year-old male. The patient had a pulsating pain in the posterior portion of his head and the laboratory findings were normal on admission, with the exception of the cerebrospinal fluid which showed increased pressure, a slightly lowered sugar level, and some cells. On the 4th day of hospitalization the patient’s temperature rose to 103.4 F. and the cerebrospinal fluid contained 685 mg. per 100 ml. of protein and 0 mg. per 100 ml. of sugar, although all of the other laboratory tests were normal. The organism was isolated from the cerebrospinal fluid, after the individual died on the 4th day of hospitalization. It grew well on blood and chocolate agars and the biochemical tests were found to be characteristic of H. aphrophilus.
