Abstract
Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy was used to establish methyl hydroperoxide as the dominant product of the gas-phase reaction of methylperoxy radicals with hydroperoxy radicals. Over the pressure range 15–700 Torr of either air or oxygen, 92 ± 5% of the reaction of CH3O2 with HO2 proceeds via channel (1a) CH3O2+ HO2→ CH3OOH + O2(1a) Quoted errors represent 2σ. This result is discussed with respect to previous kinetic and mechanistic studies of peroxy radicals and computer models of atmospheric chemistry.
