SCATTERING OF LASER PUMPED AND ORIENTED Ne (2p53s) ATOMS

Abstract
Differential cross sections at thermal energies are measured for Ne(2p53s, J = 0 and 2) + Ne by two different methods. The Doppler shift method is for this system far inferior to the conventional one. It is found that the g/u-splitting of the J=0 state of the Ne*2 excimer state is inverted compared to all ab initio and pseudopotential calculations. One specific MJ level of the J = 2 state can be prepared by optical pumping in a magnetic field. Rotating its quantisation axis with respect to the relative velocity vector has a very large effect on the differential cross section
