Abstract
Coats isolated from spores of B. megatherium and B. subtilis after mechanical disintegration contain an insoluble hexosamine complex of characteristic composition. Traces of this complex are found in B. cereus spore coats. This complex is liberated in a soluble form when spore coats are suspended in distilled water or buffer solutions, maximum liberation occurring between pH 5.0 and 8.0. Lysozyme accelerates the rate of liberation of the complex but modifies the composition. The composition of the complex is similar to that of the mucopolysaccharide present in cells of Micrococcus lysodeikticus. Keywords
