A simple glass-fibre drawing apparatus

Abstract
A simple glass-fibre drawing apparatus is described which has given satisfactory service up to 1600°C. The apparatus consists of a vertical platinum resistance tube furnace and ancillary temperature control devices. A platinum crucible with a small orifice at the bottom serves as the container of the glass melt. Tensile strength results of several experimental glass fibres are presented together with description of a simple method of gripping the fibre while testing its strength on an Instron machine.
