Abstract
OPEN reduction of mandibular fractures is an acceptable procedure, and a variety of methods for obtaining stabilization are available. We prefer metallic implant (splint) fixation, when possible, and have found a Vitallium mesh implant to be more satisfactory than other materials presently available. The use of this material for fracture stabilization evolved from its use in the construction of mandibular prostheses by Hahn1 and their subsequent practical application by Hahn1 and Corgill.2 We present this as a new material for fixation of mandibular fractures. Material The metal we used is the Vitallium mesh which is commonly used in the construction of partial dentures. It may be obtained from dental laboratories, and several standard sizes are available. For fracture fixation, mesh size 100 is used. This is 0.75 mm thick, with strands 1 mm wide, and with spaces of 2×2 mm (Fig 1). Our source supplies the meshKeywords
