A Piezoelectric Cascade Impactor for Aerosol Monitoring

Abstract
An instrument for determining the particle size distribution of aerosols has been designed, built, and calibrated. Its operation is based on the observation of the frequency shift of piezoelectric quartz crystals caused by the deposition of particles onto them by means of inertial impaction. The impactor comprises four stages with cutoff sizes for unit density particles of 18.9, 12.6, 6.3, and 2.5 µm (microns). A flow rate of 8.33×10-6 m3/sec (0.5 liter/min) is used.
