Abstract
In the Mangere district of Auckland long-term pastures were found to support heavy infestations of the Argentine Stem Weevil, Hyperodes bonariensis Kuschel. Established pastures were less damaged than young or newly sown pastures. vVhite clover tended to invade areas denuded by the weevil, thereby producing an unbalanced sward. Paspalum and 30–40 year old pastures were virtually uninfested. The duration of the breeding season in Auckland in 1959–60 was somewhat similar to that in the South Island in 1955–7: the Auckland season began in mid-July (approximately six weeks earlier than in the South Island), and ended in mid-April (approximately four weeks earlier). Late April is suggestecl as the most suitable period in which to apply control measures on .existing pasture. Newly sown areas may possibly be protected by the application of an insecticide soon after the seedlings appear, provided adjoining paddocks have been treated.
