Fittig bislactones in cyclopentenone synthesis: short synthesis of methylenomycin B

Abstract
Treatment of the Fittig bislactone, 3-(1,1-dihydroxypropyl)glutaric acid di-γ-lactone, with methyllithium, followed by alkali, afforded 5-carboxymethyl-2,3-dimethylcyclopent-2-en-1-one. This compound on decarboxylation with lead tetraacetate afforded the antibiotic methylenomycin B.
