Abstract
Energy dissipation during sliding contact is discussed as a fusion limiting mechanism in heavy-ion collisions. A simple model yields a critical angular momentum for fusion in good agreement with the experimental trend of Natowitz after normalization. Estimates of the nuclear viscosity coefficient are in order of magnitude agreement with two available values. Keywords
