Abstract
The 16-Personality Factor Questionnaire (16PF) was completed by 146 women and 142 men participating in an inpatient alcoholism program. The men and women did not differ significantly in mean age (43 and 42 yr), race (89 and 87% whites) or length of hospitalization (23 and 24 days). There were significant differences between the men and women on 7 of the 20 16PF factors: the women had higher scores on factors A (reserved vs. outgoing), F (sober vs. happy-go-lucky), QII (low vs. high anxiety), QIII (pathemia vs. cortertia) and QIV (subduedness vs. independence) and lower scores on factor B (less vs. more verbal intelligence). On 14 of the 20 factors the women''s scores were more variable than the men''s, suggesting that there are more differentiated subgroups among women than among men alcoholics.
