Oral care in the ICU: an important nursing role

Abstract
While it is generally accepted that oral care is a basic hygiene requirement, and its importance is appreciated, nursing literature has criticised the oral care patients receive. The provision of oral care in the intensive care unit (ICU) setting merits investigation. Despite a philosophy of individualised care, many patients in ICU continue to receive ritualised oral care. This article considers the role of the nurse in providing oral care, based on research findings and the use of an 'at risk’ calculator which indicates the frequency of oral care requirements.
