Abstract
All of the notonectoid spp. found in the Douglas Lake, Michigan region, have 5 instars. Notonecta borealis passes the winter in the egg stage; N. irrorata, N. insulata, N. undulata, and N. lunata probably winter over as adults. Buenoa elegans and B. margaritacea may possibly winter over as adults as well as by eggs as both summer and winter eggs were produced and farther south females are found all winter. B. limnocastoris and B. macrotibialis probably winter over in the egg stage only as no eggs laid in the laboratory hatched before mid winter or early spring. Keys were made for all 5th instar nymphs and eggs so that they might be identified in the field.
