Abstract
A mass entry of women into industry has been the result of state-sponsored industrialization in Ireland. This study of women at work in multinational enterprises in Co. Mayo examines the implications for trade unionism. It is argued that while women have weakened the possibilities for trade union militancy in the private sector, the increased female presence in the labour force will have a positive long term effect on working class politics in the Republic, since women now have a voice outside the home.
