INHERITANCE OF STEM RUST REACTION IN A FRONTANA-KENYA 58-NEWTHATCH DERIVATIVE

Abstract
The genetic basis of resistance to stem rust races 56 and 15B in N.S. II-50-17, a derivative from the cross Frontana x Kenya 58-Newthatch, was studied in relationto its ancestors. Test crosses with lines of Marquis carrying single known genes (Sr6-Sr9) for resistance were used to identify the genes carried by each variety. The results confirmed that Kenya 58 carries Sr6 and Sr7, and Frontana carries Sr8 and Sr9. A previously unreported gene conditioning resistance to race 56 was found in Newthatch. N.S. II-50-17 carried the genes Sr6 and Sr7 from Kenya 58, and Sr8 and Sr9 from Frontana. These 4 genes can largely account for the excellent resistance of N.S. II-50-17 and its usefulness as a supplemental differential variety.
