Abstract
Based on data from 106 developing countries in 1986, empirical results of a system of simultaneous equations support the hypothesis that socio-economic development facilitates democratic change and that countries with democratic political systems can achieve rapid economic growth. The coexistence of poverty and lack of freedom in most developing countries should not constitute a `cruel choice' between economic development and political democracy. Keywords
