Influence of Tannin Content on Preharvest seed Germination in Sorghum>1

Abstract
Preharvest seed germination occurs in grain sorghum, Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench, during periods of prolonged rainy weather where temperatures are conducive to germination. Differential preharvest seed germination among 42 hybrids in a grain sorghum hybrid test conducted at Midville, Georgia, in 1969 occurred after 5 days of near continuous rainfall. Hybrids were rated for preharvest seed germination, and this index was correlated with astringent tannin content of seed and days from planting to 10% anthesis (maturity). The correlation coefficient between germination index and astringent tannin content was negative and highly significant (r = ‐0.83). High tannin hybrids were significantly lower in preharvest seed germination than low taninn hybrids. Although tannin content of seed apparently was the dominant influence inhibiting preharvest seed germination, maturity among the nonbrown‐seeded hybrids was also involved. Later maturing nonbrown‐seeded hybrids showed a lower preharvest germination index than earlier hybrids.
