Abstract
Summary The purpose of this experiment was to study the way in which the voids ratio of a granular material depends upon the grading, and in particular to find the grading curve which gives the minimum voids ratio. The theoretical approach is discussed, but as it is not amenable to a complete study of the problem a carefully controlled experiment was carried out. The applications are not discussed in this paper but the most useful application is in the design of concrete mixes.
