Abstract
Tolbutamide activated adenyl cyclase in particulate preparations of rabbit and human hearts and increased contractility in isolated rabbit atria. Since inotropic agents can increase myocardial oxygen consumption and extend the size of the experimentally-produced myocardial injury, these data may explain the apparent increased incidence of cardiovascular deaths in patients treated with sulfonylureas reported in the University Group Diabetes Program study. Keywords
