Abstract
Staphylococcal bacteremia and its complication, endocarditis, are discussed from several viewpoints. A delineation of the factors that determine virulence of the organism and of those that determine host susceptibility is undertaken, and the manifestations of staphylococcemia as they are encountered in practice are classified with an analysis of the incidence of its signs and symptoms. The staphylococcal strains harbored in hospitals have survived exposure to many of the antibiotics, the majority of them are coagulase positive and elaborate one or more of the specific toxins and are most capable of producing serious infections.
