Abstract
The stratigraphical subdivision of the Nigerian Cretaceous, based mainly on ammonite faunas, is studied. A zonal scheme for the Cretaceous and basal Tertiary is proposed and the problem of the recognition of the Danian in Africa is discussed. The phylogeny of the Cretaceous ammonoid families occurring in Nigeria is considered in the light of published and unpublished investigations by the author. The vertical distribution of a number of West African Upper Cretaceous lamellibranchs is reviewed. An attempt is made to reconstruct the main palaeogeographical changes in southern Nigeria and the Southern Cameroons. Keywords
