Ground-State OH Anomalies in the Direction of the Galactic Centre

Abstract
The OH clouds along the line of sight towards the galactic centre region produce widespread anomalous emission and absorption in the ground-state satellite-line profiles at 1612 and 1720 MHz. The anomalies are consistent with a transfer of population between the F = 1 and the F = 2 hyperfine levels of the ground state. For the clouds in the nuclear disk the radiation causing the transfer may be associated with the infrared sources in the galactic nucleus; for the other clouds the radiation must originate farther out from the nucleus.
