Work and Welfare: A Reevaluation of AFDC

Abstract
Policy development and research trends—as they relate to work, welfare, and AFDC—are reviewed in this article. The authors examine the persistence over time of the values of capitalism, liberalism, and positivism, which have resulted in the work ethic and influenced the nature of AFDC. They outline a research agenda to counter the influence of these values and further the development of a child support system more relevant to the present needs of the nation.
