Abstract
Benadryl, Thephorin, Diatrine, Thenylene and Pyribenzamine do not Trichophyton mentagrophytes exert any fungicidal activity in concns. of 1%, 2.5%, 5% and 10%. The static effectiveness is in the following descending order: Thephorin, Diatrine and Benadryl, Pyribenzamine, Thenylene and Neo-Antergan. The prevention of fungal growth by the antihistaminics was moderately overcome in the presence of 0.25 mg. and completely overcome with 0.75 mg. of histamine. Histidine had no such effect. In the presence of antihistaminics the organism appears unable to decarboxylate histidine. T. mentagrophytes requires histamine for growth and the cellular chemical topography concerned seems blocked by the antihistaminics; the reversal is apparently competitive for the degree depends on histamine concn. within certain limits. Keywords
