Abstract
Dominance, independent action and mutual weakening of S alleles in heterozygotes are discussed in terms of reaction rates, threshold effects and limits to gene action. It is suggested that dominance results from unequal competition for some limiting factor; independent action from the absence of limits; mutual weakening from secondary limits. This hypothesis indicates moderate limits to S allele action in the pollen and stigmas of sporophytic incompatibility systems, more restrictive limits in the pollen of artificial tetraploids with gametophytic systems and the absence of limits in styles of gametophytic systems. These differences correspond to differences in the time and site of S allele action. This publication has 13 references indexed in Scilit:
