Abstract
MOGRIDGE M. and PARR J. B. (1997) Metropolis or region: on the development and structure of London, Reg. Studies 31, 97‐115. Drawing on a disparate range of sources and viewing the question from several perspectives, an attempt is made to trace the development of London over the period since 1800. An account of the physical expansion and population growth is outlined, with ‘London' defined at a number of distinct scales. Attention is first focused on London as a metropolis, and various modelling techniques are used to illustrate the nature of metropolitan expansion. Consideration is given to the possibility that the changing spatial distribution of population through migration may be likened to a well-known process in physics. This is followed by an analysis of London at the broader scale of a region, with similar modelling techniques being employed. Finally, the question is raised as to whether London can still be meaningfully viewed as a metropolitan entity or whether a regional perspective is now more appropriate. MOGRIDGE M. et PARR J. B. A partir des sources complètement différentes et examinant la question sous plusieurs angles, on essaie de suivre la trace du développement de Londres depuis 1800. On esquisse l'expansion physique et la croissance de la population, tout en délimitant 'Londres' à de nombreuses échelles différentes. D'abord c'est Londres en tant que métropole qui est le point de mire, et on utilise diverses techniques de modélisation pour mettre en lumière le caractère de l'expansion métropolitaine. On considère la possibilité que l'on puisse comparer l'évolution de la distribution géographique de la population due à la migration à un processus bien connu en physique. Il s'ensuit une analyse de Londres sur le plan régional à partir des techniques de modélisation similaires. Pour terminer, on pose la question suivante: Londres, peut-on la considérer toujours de façon positive en tant que métropole ou de nos jours est-ce qu'il faut l'envisager dans une optique régionale. Es wird mit einer Palette ganz verschiedenartiger Quellen, und mittels Angehen der Frage von verschiedenen Standpunkten aus der Versuch unternommen, der Entwicklung Londons im Zeitraum 1800 bis zur Gegenwart nachzugehen. Physikalische Ausweitung und Bevo¨lkerungszuwachs werden umrissen, wobei London mit verschiedenen Maßsta¨ben definiert wird. Die Aufmerksamkeit wird zuna¨chst auf London als Metropole gelenkt, und verschiedene Modelltechniken benutzt, um die Natur der Ausweitung zur Metropole zu erla¨utern. Es wird die Mo¨glichkeit erwogen die sich wandelnde ra¨umliche Verteilung der Bevo¨lkerung durch Wanderung mit einem wohlbekannten Prozeß in der Physik zu verglichen. Dem folgt eine Analyse Londons im gro¨ßeren Maßstab einer Region unter Verwendung a¨hnlicher Modelltechniken. Abschließend wird die Frage aufgeworfen, ob es noch sinnvoll ist, London als eine in sich geschlossene Metropole zu betrachten, oder eine regionale Perspektive jetzt zutreffender ist.
