Abstract
A two-stage survey of 199 corporations in 15 industrial classifications found that firms tend to adopt more complete formal long-range planning processes as the complexity and instability of the business environment increases. These findings were moderated by including the size of the firm as an intervening variable. Other hypotheses dealing with the environment and long-range planning were tested with mixed results. Keywords
