INTRAVAGINAL MARKERS FOR ACCURATE RADIONUCLIDE LOCALIZATION OF THE PLACENTA

Abstract
Fifteen pregnant patients were studied with regard to the accuracy of the symphysis pubis as an indirect indicator of the position of the internal cervical os in placental imaging. A radionuclide marker was placed in the posterior vaginal fornix to [See figure in the pdf file] approximate the region of the internal cervical os. The distance between this marker and the one placed over the symphysis pubis ranged from 0 to 8 cm., with an average of 4 cm. It is concluded that an intravaginal, rather than a pubic, marker is required to distinguish placentas which are low-lying and previa, since the two conditions necessitate divergent management. This is particularly true of those patients wherein the fetus is in a transverse lie and the cervix is pulled cephalad.
