Resistance to -lactam antibiotics in Bacteroides species

Abstract
This review is concerned with the anaerobic bacteria of the genus Bacteroides and their resistance to β -lactam antibiotics. The presence of β -lactamase activity in various Bacteroides species is reported as well as the characteristics of the different β -lactamases encountered. Evidence for the important role of the β -lactamase from Bacteroides fragilis in its resistance to β -lactam antibiotics is presented. The role of a permeability barrier is also discussed. Clinical data regarding the significance of β -lactamase production in infections caused by Bacteroides is also presented.
