Abstract
OVER TWO YEARS AGO Richard Martin described some problems that have developed around the “superscholar” or postdoctorate on the US campus. He noted that the usefulness of the postdoctorate to society is being questioned, and many suspect that the appointment simply serves as a haven for professional students who contribute relatively little to society, or who in one way or another are delaying a useful and permanent adjustment to society. Keywords
