Abstract
The use of knowledge based systems (KBS) to represent the concepts and relations involved in the interpretations of signals obtained from the monitoring and testing of full-scale civil engineering systems is discussed. The requirements of a KBS to assist in the interpretation of measurements are defined. The concept of hierarchical modelling is introduced as a means of enabling the choice of an appropriate level of problem representation within a KBS. A working system is presented for representing shape and value information of signals in an appropriate form. Methods are described using the example of a signal derived from the non-destructive testing of a pile. The use of those representations in a KBS are illustrated. Keywords
