Acantholysis in Pemphigus, an Immunologic Phenomenon

Abstract
Antiepithelial autoantibodies were produced in rabbits by homologous sensitization with an antigen derived from esophagus epithelium. The antiepithelial autoantibodies were tissue specific but not species specific. In in vitro tests they behaved identically to the antiepithelial autoantibodies present in the serum of patients with the bulbous skin disease pemphigus. The formation of intraepidermal clefts, based on acantholysis, could be induced in rabbits with high titers of antiepithelial autoantibodies. Acantholysis in pemphigus is a manifestation of autoimmunity.
