Abstract
The stability of bands in external fields is described by means of a spectral-density operator. It is shown that unlike the conventional density of states that behaves discontinuously in the presence of external fields, the spectral-density operator is a continuous function of the perturbation parameter. The behavior of the spectral density is in agreement with the experimental results on the stability of bands in external electric and magnetic fields. Keywords
