Abstract
We make an analytical investigation of the effect of electricaldischarge on the surface and deeper layers of insulation up tothe stage of phase change of the material or its components. Fordischarge in a narrow insulating channel, which has been closelyinvestigated, calculations are shown to correspond to observedexperience. The great importance of the upper thin layer ofinsulation to arc resistance of the material is emphasized. Asimplified formula for calculating the penetration depth of anassigned temperature is given. Keywords
