Abstract
Several derivatives and breakdown products of palitantin from Penicillium palitans were prepd. and are described. Palitantin, contrary to the previous statement (Birkinshaw and Raistrick, 1936), has a slight but definite optical activity. The oxidation of palitantin and its derivatives with periodate was studied quantitatively. Tetrahydropalitantin probably consists of a 6-carbon ring with a n-heptyl and a formyl group as sub-stituents and with OH groups situated alpha and beta to the formyl group. In palitantin one double bond is in the C7 chain in the gamma position to the terminal methyl group. The function of the 4th O atom and position of the 2d double bond (if present) are still obscure. The acidic substance which accompanies palitantin as a metabolic product of P. palitans is identical with frequentin isolated from P. frequentans by Curtis et al.Keywords
