A New Method for Portal Venography: Retrograde Hepatic Flushing.

Abstract
A No. 9 Cournand catheter was introduced throught the exposed external jugular vein of the anesthetized dog, guided into the right hepatic vein, wedged peripherally, and then pulled free about one cm. Rapid injection of 20 ml of 50% diatrizoate (Hypaque) resulted in local hepatic vein filling, followed by sinusoidal filling, and then retrograde filling of the entire intrahepatic portal system. There were minimal focal changes at the sites of injection. Application for the study of human cases is in progress.
