Abstract
An apparatus which applies a cyclic load to a square of fabric along the warp or weft direction and a simultaneous constant load in the orthogonal direction has been constructed for use in investigating the relationships between stress and strain when a fabric is subjected to repeated stressing in two directions. Experimental results obtained on a plain cloth are compared with the theoretical stress-strain characteristics calculated from cloth geometry, assuming perfectly flexible yarns of unchanging cross-section. The theoretical changes in dimensions during a cycle, calculated on these assumptions, are considerably greater than the observed experimental changes, and it is considered that the lack of agreement between the two is chiefly due to the neglect of yarn stiffness in the theoretical approach. Keywords
