Abstract
Recent data on production in the pion fragmentation region reveal significant dependence on the flavor of the beam particle, contrary to the expectation of perturbative QCD. It is shown that the result obtained in the valon model without any adjustable parameters agrees well with the data. The dynamical mechanism is the recombination of the projectile partons, whose momentum distributions are well specified by the valon model.
