Abstract
The transfer of uninsured patients from private to public hospitals for purely economic reasons, a practice known as "dumping," has attracted much unfavorable publicity of late, particularly when it has involved patients requiring emergency care. As I noted last year,1 medical judgment should always prevail over economic and administrative considerations in decisions about the movement of acutely ill or injured patients from one hospital to another; otherwise, much harm can be done.
