Methods of Rearing and Transporting Predacious Mites

Abstract
Plastic plates with a border of oil, to which was added grease or vaseline, were used for breeding predacious mites in the laboratory. The addition of grease or vaseline to the oil increased the density of the oil border and facilitated microscopic examination. The contact of mites with the oil border was prevented by a 2-3-mm-high wall around its inner side. Small stocks of mites were bred in round plastic containers, which were put into a large rectangular tray kept at optimal moisture and aeration conditions. Mass breeding of mites feeding on pollen or live food (phytophagous mites) was carried out by putting fruits or leaves infested with Tetranychus cinnabarinus Boisduval in the center of large plates. Mites were transported to the citrus plantations in plastic tubes into which the mites were placed by a vacuum pump.
