Abstract
Selection of teacher candidates is cen tral to current debates about improving teacher quality. Applegate's overview provides a discussion of four issues that have continued to plague decision mak ers in efforts to make selection into teacher preparation and the profession meaningful: purpose of selection, stan dards and criteria, professional judg ment, and legal and ethical considera tions.Keywords
