Abstract
System V UNIX has been used for real-time applications in a dual computer system consisting of two PCT-ATs under XENIX System V.2. The dual computer system, PCP (Pump Control Program), communicates with up to 192 infusion pumps and 64 urine monitors. These medical devices are connected to the PCP by a hardware multiplexer and two normal RS 232C lines per computer. The medical devices are polled every minute by the PCP, which communicates with the departmental computer system, IUSY (a German acronym for integrated system for monitoring), every 30 minutes when operating on a periodic basis or immediately when requested to do so.
